Return of the Mummy
As Colin
Keaveney reports from Los Angeles,
Hollywood's commitment to restore Egyptian "Mummy" may breath
new life into the quest to preserve Egypt's cinematic heritage. For
those who care about Egyptian cinema, it could bea scene from a horror
movie: the camera pans along row uponrow of poorly labeled cans in
a dusty storage room in Giza; one employee propped against the shelves
is surprised by the camera's light and struggles to his feet; another,
perhaps unaware of the flammability of old nitrate film stock
,seems
to be smoking; upon opening, some cans reveal badly warped reels of
celluloid. |
